Install Microsoft 365 Apps on a Computer

Install Microsoft 365 Apps on a Computer

For a single licensed user, the simplest supported method is normally the Microsoft 365 portal. In managed environments, use Intune, Configuration Manager or the Office Deployment Tool so version, update channel and application selection are controlled centrally.

Single-user installation

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 portal with the work or school account that has a Microsoft 365 Apps licence.
  2. Open the Apps/Install apps option and download the installer offered for the account.
  3. Run the installer with a stable internet connection.
  4. Open Word or another Office app and sign in to activate.

Before troubleshooting activation

  • Confirm the user actually has a licence that includes the desktop apps.
  • Remove unsupported or conflicting legacy Office installations if necessary.
  • Check system time, proxy/TLS inspection and access to Microsoft service endpoints.
  • For shared computers or RDS/AVD, confirm whether Shared Computer Activation is required by your licensing/design.

For business fleets, avoid asking each user to install Office manually. A managed deployment gives you consistent architecture, channel and update behaviour.
