Supervise Organisation-Owned Apple Devices with Apple Configurator

Supervision gives an organisation additional management capabilities on corporate-owned Apple devices. For devices purchased through Apple Business Manager, Automated Device Enrollment is normally the more scalable approach. Apple Configurator is useful for existing or manually prepared devices.

Preparation

  • Back up any required user data because preparation can erase the device.
  • Use a Mac with a current Apple Configurator version.
  • Have the organisation’s MDM enrollment design ready before preparing production devices.

High-level workflow

  1. Connect the device to the Mac and open Apple Configurator.
  2. Select the device and choose the preparation workflow.
  3. Choose the organisation/MDM options appropriate to your deployment.
  4. Enable supervision for organisation-owned devices when required by your policy.
  5. Complete preparation and allow the device to restart through Setup Assistant.
  6. Confirm the MDM profile, ownership and supervision state in your management platform.

Do not use supervision to manage personally owned devices. For new corporate devices, evaluate Apple Business Manager + Automated Device Enrollment first because it avoids repeated manual USB preparation.
